The Health Report Form

The Chow Chow Health and Cause of Death Form.
This form will enable owners to report health conditions they have experienced in their chows - both current (living chows) as well as causes of death .   Please note it isn't just for chows that have left us - it is for any chow that has experienced a health concern.  Copy and past this link into your browser.

Interesting read :- " The Question Of Non- Standard Colours"  Article written by Dr. Mike Tempest, and originally appeared in
Dog World April 2016, kind permission granted to appear here.   Take a look on our Health Section Page.

The Chow Chow Breed Council were asked by the Kennel Club to provide an average price that chow chow breeders charge for pet chow chow puppies.  This information will be used to provide factual  information for would be puppy purchasers to use when looking at puppies advertised on websites such as Gumtree etc.     With this in mind the Breed Council designed a short survey, looking at price ranges related to area as well as what to expect to be given when they take their puppy home.  Similarly we asked what  health tests the breeder would expect to have carried out on the parents prior to breeding.   A full report is now available, and can be found here:- RESULTS

Puppy purchasers should be cautious about buying puppies from internet web sites.   We strongly advise that potential purchasers should only purchase Kennel Club registered puppies,  and should contact The Breed Council Secretary or any of the Chow Breed Club Secretaries with reference to a breeder before making payment.   People looking for a puppy may find  the Kennel Club's website of use where they will find a list of breeders who are part of the Assured Breeder Scheme and a list of puppies available for purchase.
It has been brought to our attention that it is a possibility that Chow Chows can be illegally imported before their accepted age of import.  To do so would be a serious concern to the breed and it would be very irresponsible to do so.   We are aware that young pups of all breeds are being brought into the UK and the health/safety of these pups who possibly have not been fully vaccinated is paramount.  We also have the grave concerns of the possibility of introducing Rabies or other serious health issues to all in the UK.

Chow Chow Breed Council have launched a new health scheme, click here to see a list of chows that have been assessed under the Chow Chow Bronze Health Scheme

The Chow Chow Breed Council have regularly held Health Testing Sessions in conjunction with some of the General Ch. Shows and at one of our Ch. Club shows.    Your chows have to be 15 months of age or over, and will have to be microchipped.   Testing can be done by any veterinary surgeon who may charge for this service, alternatively, from time to time testing sessions will be run  either at General Championship shows or through Chow Chow Breed Club shows where the testing costs will be kept to a minimum.   Scheduled testing sessions will be advertised on this site and the Chow Chow Breed Council Facebook page as well as individual club websites.

All Club members are encouraged to contact their Club Secretary with any items they wish the Breed Council to discuss and the relevant Breed Club Delegates will raise the matter on your behalf.

The aims and objectives of the Breed Council are :

To urge Breeders, Judges and Show Committees to accept the Breed Standard as the only standard of excellence for the breeding and judging of Chow Chows.
The Council will encourage activities with the clubs, helping to create facilities for those seeking information to further their knowledge of the breed, and to maintain and promote the standard of excellence in the breed.

To enable all member Chow Chow Clubs in the U.K. to speak with a united voice on all matters affecting the breed.

To maintain judges lists and support the training and education of judges.

To make recommendations to the Committee of the Kennel Club.

As at 2011 the Chow Chow Breed Council consists of nine participating clubs. Two representatives from each Club meet three times a year to discuss Chow related topics
